SHIRI MORDECHAY

"Festum Existentialis," translated into English relates to an Existential Feast. We can also see the roots of the word "festival" within this. In this exhibit, the carnivalesque and theatrical elements in the work leap out at the viewer, as one is drawn in towards what seems to be endless detail.

Three-dimensional elements create a series of microverses, woven upon the other. Mordechay's characters tread upon our subconscious thoughts and reflect shattered boundaries. The cloaked extremes of our existence are called out in Mordechay's paintings.

Shiri Mordechay's paintings are primarily watercolor & ink on paper, often with materials such as wire and beads medium. It is vividly detailed and labor-intensive. She creates individual elements consisting of fantastical characters, interiors and landscapes, then assembles them into three-dimensional worlds that are immersive and sprawling. These subjects have a particular enchantment that mixes biographical events with raw emotions.
