WENDY KLEMPERER

The imagery that pervades my work reflects a lifelong fascination with animals. To make the large scale sculptures I search scrap yards for industrial refuse ravaged by usage and demolition. Bent and twisted, such pieces contain energy and potential new life. My welding process is a kind of three dimensional gesture drawing. With a network of steel lines I build skeletal forms containing both presence and absence.
I investigate the body language of animals to express a feeling or state of being, with motion conveying emotion. Focusing on the animal realm- probing the relationship between all forms of life on earth - seems no less important to me than the human aspect alone.
To make the silhouette pieces I select a drawing or sculpture, photograph , and then project the image onto a steel plate. I trace and then hand-cut each form using a plasma cutter. These silhouettes can be grouped and sited in a myriad of ways, creating an alternate world. Creatures of memory, archetype, and imagination evoke a threshold between reality and dream.
